James was born in Anahola, Kauai and was raised in Koloa until relocating to Oahu to attend Farrington High School during his sophomore year.A veteran of the Korean War, James served honorably in the US Army and was a Platoon Sergeant and Combat Veteran earning two Bronze Service Stars.
